In the studio this week: Comfort zones

In the studio this week: Comfort zones

I love January. I love it for the sense of renewal, the heightened creative energy, the clarity of purpose. I love it for the planning. Oh the planning! There has been much of it happening this month, and I am excited to share it all in due course. It is going to be a big year for Red Gate Stitchery and I am thrilled to have you along for the ride.

You belong here

You belong here

I consider myself lucky to live within easy driving distance of Gather Here, a stitch lounge in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It's a retail shop that stocks an absurdly lovely selection of fabric, yarn, and other crafty goodies (including Red Gate Stitchery kits - yay!). It's heaven to shop, but it is so much more than a retail store.

Quilt Market here we come!

Quilt Market here we come!

Final preparations are underway for Quilt Market in Houston this weekend. No matter how carefully I plan, it always comes down to a last-minute scramble. I leave on Thursday and packing (and even some stitching!) is still taking place, but with every minute I get more and more excited.

The making of a pendant

The making of a pendant

Designing new pieces is one of my favorite things to do. Sometimes a design starts with a stitched motif that I want to translate into jewelry. Other times, the basic shape of the piece comes first and stitching comes later. Such was the case with my new pendant design.

New year, new space

New year, new space

2016 is shaping up to be a big year for Red Gate Stitchery. I have grand plans and exciting projects in the works and millions of ideas swirling around inside my brain. Most thrilling of all, these plans and projects and ideas will soon have a new space to bloom in. For the past few months, we have been living amid construction dust and noise and general disruption as a fabulous new studio space is built in our home. It's every maker's dream: a clean, bright, inspiring space in which to create. A home for creative hopes and dreams. A launching pad. A safe haven. I am giddy beyond belief. Most of the construction is done now, save a bit of electrical work and painting, and I will soon be setting up the space. It feels like a blank slate. It feels like the start of something good. Here's hoping your 2106 is the start of something good too.
